The Shift Engineer is accountable for implementing and reporting the engineering elements' variance, including electrical and mechanical tasks, as detailed in the mine planning tool for their respective shift. The Shift Engineer, in conjunction with the Shift Under manager, is the shift leadership team that maintains safety targets, site standards, and legislative WHS matters. The role is responsible for managing the performance and providing leadership to the tradespeople on their shift.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate visible safe work practices and a commitment to safety in the workplace.

  • Ensure planned engineering activities are conducted in compliance with Health and Safety Management System, legislative requirements, and site standards both addressing and reporting any variances.

  • Actively participate in the implementation and maintenance of the Health and Safety Management System. Execute the shift plan per the mine plan details whilst monitoring compliance with statutory requirements by all personnel on the shift within the area of responsibility.  

  • Maintain an updated awareness of all relevant safety requirements, legislation, and company policies, and communicate these to employees.

  • Achieve cost-effective operations of the engineering department and specific projects in accordance with the annual operating budget by actively monitoring costs, maintaining optimum work practices, maximizing productivity, and ensuring effective utilization of shift people and resources.

  • Liaise directly with the company members regarding equipment performance to determine maintenance requirements and reliability issues to be addressed.

  • Manage and review events and ensure that escalation protocols are complied with

  • Manage the planning and execution of unplanned work and escalate or re-schedule (where practical) the existing work orders.

  • Review work execution performance with team members, identify gaps, and take corrective action as necessary to improve performance

  • Attend to the equipment breakdowns to provide technical assistance. Where required, support the Trades and Deputies to enable the equipment to be brought back online as quickly and as safely as possible.

  • Monitor maintenance work and ensure it is carried out in a timely manner, with minimal disruption to production, and in a cost-effective manner in respect of materials and resources.

  • Regularly audit compliance with engineering standards and procedures

  • Initiate root cause analysis and failure-type reviews of incidents with individuals, plant, equipment, and infrastructure.

  • Manage and monitor bridging and forcing compliance and audit-identified controls are being implemented

  • Ensure the defect management procedures at the operation are complied with

  • Review and countersign trades shift reports to ensure that all relevant information is accurate

  • Ensure that nonconformances with work orders are appropriately escalated and prioritized

  • Maintain and publish accurate shiftly engineering summary report

Qualifications

  • Excellent communication skills in English, both written and oral

  • A University degree in a Mechanical or Electrical Trade

  • Advance Diploma in Engineering or in the process of obtaining (desired)

  • >5 years of experience in underground coal mining

  • Experience in managing personnel including employees, contractors, and OEM’s

  • Experienced in the use of Maintenance Management Systems (Pulse)
